Patient Presentation:
A 46-year-old female presented with a three-month history of anterior neck swelling.
Initial Workup:
Thyroid function tests revealed normal levels with TSH at 0.90 µIU/mL and FT4 at 19 pmol/L. Neck ultrasound demonstrated a single, well-defined, solid isoechoic nodule measuring 43 × 33 × 23 mm (TI-RADS 3) located in the mid-lower third of the right thyroid lobe.
Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA):
Cytological analysis of the nodule was classified as Thy 2, indicating a benign lesion.
Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Decision:
Given the size of the nodule and its clinical presentation, the MDT recommended a right thyroid nodulectomy. The procedure was successfully performed without complications.
Histopathological Examination (HPE):
Postoperative histopathology confirmed the presence of a benign hyperplastic thyroid follicular nodule with no evidence of malignancy.
Discussion:
This case highlights the importance of a systematic approach to managing thyroid nodules. The use of ultrasound and FNA guided the diagnosis and informed the decision for surgical intervention. The benign histopathological outcome reaffirms the role of targeted surgical management in appropriately selected cases.
Conclusion:
The successful management of this patient demonstrates the value of a multidisciplinary approach in evaluating and treating thyroid nodules. Regular follow-up is essential to monitor for potential recurrence or development of new nodules.
